XRP Transaction Fee: How Much Does It Cost?

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) charges a small network fee on every transaction to protect against spam and denial-of-service attacks. This fee is permanently burned, not collected by any party.

The minimum XRP transaction fee is 0.00001 XRP, also written as 10 drops. At current XRP prices near $1.35 USD, this amounts to less than $0.00002 per transaction — making XRPL one of the cheapest blockchain networks for transfers.

Unlike Ethereum gas fees that fluctuate based on demand, XRP fees remain extremely stable under normal network conditions. The fee formula is:

Current Transaction Cost in XRP = base_fee_xrp × load_factor

The base fee is fixed at 10 drops, and the load factor multiplier only increases significantly during periods of extreme network congestion — which is rare on XRPL.

Why XRP Fees Are So Low

XRP's consensus mechanism — the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA) — does not require computational work like Bitcoin's proof-of-work. This design allows validators to process thousands of transactions per second with minimal overhead.

The fee destruction mechanism also means that XRP is mildly deflationary over time. Since XRPL launched in 2012, over 14 million XRP have been burned through transaction fees.

  • Standard fee: 10 drops (0.00001 XRP)
  • Fees are burned, not given to validators
  • 1 XRP covers approximately 100,000 transactions
  • Fee is the same regardless of transfer amount
